  • Walmart parking lots: A Walmart parking lot is a great spot to park overnight. It’s a nationwide chain, so you’ll likely come across one on your travels. Overnight parking, including with an RV, is allowed at about half of the nation’s 4,700 Walmarts, Drivin’ & Vibin’ reports, so call ahead to confirm. The parking lots are well-lit, improving safety. Some stores are open 24 hours, providing restroom access, and many offer free Wi-Fi. But light sleepers might have trouble with the bright lights and early-morning shoppers.

  • Plano, Frisco, McKinney and other northern suburbs of Dallas are all thick with Toyota transplants and gaming, telecom and logistics sorts heavier in Northeast Tarrant (Fort Worth) County. Lots of other tech types are in and around Austin, especially Round Rock. Northwest suburbs around San Antonio draw a lot of digital graphics and video techies along with some telecom. Houston area, Dallas and Denton have been drawing all the above plus a lot of medical technology people. Houston and the Lower Rio Grande Valley are getting space jobs. Chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering researchers are moving to the Bryan/College Station area around Texas A&M. Airline workers find the DFW area an important step in their career with either American or Southwest.

Probably Austin and maybe San Antonio top the list. Austin is very progressive and many Californians with money also move to small towns in between the two cities where the scenic and somewhat more “country” Hill Country beckons. The climate is similar to parts of California and Hill Country wineries have done quite well in the last several decades.
